From the time he was first introduced to Harufutei Yanagiso V in 1970, he was acclaimed as a top rakugo performer, and in 1980 he was promoted to Shinuchi without 36 others. He is known as one of the central figures behind the modern rakugo society. He is also active as an actor, appearing in dramas and variety shows. He was the only rakugo performer to give a solo performance at the Nippon Budokan and also gave a solo performance at the Tokyo Kabuki Theater. He also has a deep knowledge of classical music and has given concerts as a conductor.
