Kozo Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy
Kozo-ji Temple has a history of over 1400 years and is designated as the 30th temple of the 33rd Kannon in the Bando region. In ) the reign of Emperor Yomei (, while the priests ( Tokugi Shonin ) were practicing asceticism ( and engaging in ascetic practices ), an old man ( appeared and pointed to an old tree. There was a statue of the Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) about four inches high enshrined there, so he and the villagers built a hall to worship her, which is the origin of the temple.
There is a legend about the birth of Kamatari Fujiwara in Kozo-ji Temple. Kamatari deeply respected the greatness of the Kannon and, in gratitude to his mother, built the main hall and many other buildings in July 23, 1763, 650 ) and ruled the area.
Unfortunately, these buildings were destroyed by fire, and were rebuilt in 1526, the 6th year of Oei ( the end of Muromachi period ), and is now the main hall.
Niomon Gate ・ The bell tower was rebuilt in the Edo period. The main hall, Niomon Gate ・ and Bell Tower Hall were designated as Kisarazu City's cultural properties ( on February 17, 1976 ).
